A speedster spectacle in “The Flash”
Worlds collide when the Flash uses his superpowers to travel back in time to change the events of the past. But it alters the future where General Zod has returned. With no other superheroes to turn to, the Flash looks to coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian, albeit not the one he’s looking for.
Geek Rate: Mortal Worthy (3 out of 5 stars). “The Flash” is a visually stunning, action-packed addition to the DC’s extended universe. It successfully brings one of DC’s most beloved speedsters to the forefront with dazzling visuals and a compelling storyline.
Ezra Miller returns as Barry Allen, aka The Flash, and once again proves his mettle as the scarlet speedster. Miller’s portrayal of Barry Allen is endearing and relatable, and he effortlessly balances the character’s quirkiness with the emotional depth needed to make us care about the fate of this superhero.
The film kicks off with a bang, wasting no time in immersing the audience in the world of speedsters. The action sequences are the standout moments of “The Flash.” The visual effects and cinematography used to depict the speed force are jaw-dropping and take full advantage of the character’s unique abilities. The high-speed chases and battles are a treat for the eyes and provide a sense of awe that only a character like The Flash can deliver.
The supporting cast is equally impressive. Kiersey Clemons shines as Iris West, bringing a refreshing and charismatic presence to the film. Sasha Calle as Supergirl makes a memorable debut, adding another layer to the DCEU. Michael Keaton’s return as Batman in another universe (or time) is a nostalgic nod to fans, and he brings gravitas to his role as the seasoned Dark Knight. And of course, there’s Ben Affleck as the Batman in our universe (it’s confusing). His chemistry with Miller’s Flash is a highlight of the film.
The plot, while engaging, does get a bit convoluted at times, and some of the time-travel elements might leave viewers scratching their heads. However, it manages to explore Barry Allen’s past, present, and future in a way that deepens our understanding of the character and sets up exciting possibilities for future DCEU installments.
One of the film’s strengths is its ability to balance humor with heart. The witty one-liners and banter between characters inject much-needed levity into the story without undermining its emotional core. “The Flash” manages to explore themes of family, identity, and the consequences of one’s actions, all while delivering a fun superhero adventure.
The only major drawback of “The Flash” is its occasionally uneven pacing. Some scenes feel rushed, while others linger a bit too long. Tighter editing could have improved the overall flow of the film.
With Ezra Miller’s charismatic performance, impressive visuals, and a healthy dose of heart, “The Flash” is a must-see for fans of the superhero genre and a promising sign of what’s to come in the DCEU’s future.
